This painting is magical and here's why!
1. Out of all the bows I have ever painted, this one has the strongest, craziest, most convincing trompe l'oeil of them all! Kids walk into my studio and tell me they thought it was a real bow.
2. Still life paintings traditionally rely on one light source to create a believable scenario, but a lot of interiors these days are lit with multiple lights, which cast a variety of shadows. This bow was painted under natural window light as well as several daylight bulbs hanging from my studio ceiling. I think these multiple shadows that all look exactly the way I saw them contribute to the success of the magical illusion.
3. The grommets in this painting are all real. They give the viewer the super power to see through the artwork while never veering away from the painting's internal logic. All of the grommets are strategically placed to move your eye around and their tones are chosen by which shadow or light they inhabit.
